Stadium Review -
The Stadium Tour
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Stadium
Raymond James Stadium is one of the finest facilities in the National Football League. Home to the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it hosts a sea-faring pirate theme that really brings the stadium to life on gameday. With stadium staff in pirate costumes, palm trees decorating the periphery, and a full scale pirate ship, the designers of Raymond James Stadium have really brought “A Pirate’s Life” to the gameday fan experience. when the Bucs score some of the finest concessions in the league mingle with local fans as cannons fire from. The maritime atmosphere, coupled with warm Florida afternoons that stretch well into the winter season, make Raymond James Stadium an ideal place for catching an NFL game. Because I’m such a big fan of the stadium, I was very anxious to take a behind the scenes stadium tour to learn more about Raymond James Stadium. I’ve always been fascinated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Pirate ship that sits in the north endzone as if its cruising through a sea of red on gameday. This Pirate ship is easily the most unique stadium feature in the league and I have always wanted to board the ship and check it out for myself. Although generally off limits on gameday, during stadium tour time, fans are allowed to explore and catch some amazing photo opportunities on the deck of this monstrosity.

The Stadium tour is an unbelievable bargain. Adults pay $5 and kids and seniors are charged $3 each for admission. The tour starts with a visit to the stadium jail. There is actually a holding area for disruptive fans where they’re detained until the police arrive and during the stadium tour they’re happy to take you down there. Tour Groups are then taken through the club lounge and suite areas before a quick look at the view from field level. Standing at field level looking into the 65,000 seats around you is a humbling experience, but what I found most disappointing is that we were unable to go out onto the field as I’ve done during a several other stadium tours.  Tour groups are confined to the fringes, but still get a feel for the natural grass field which features a Tifway 419 Bermuda grass with a fiber reinforced turf between the hash marks. The stadium tour concludes with a visit to Buccaneer Cove which takes up the entire span of the endzone concourse and includes the $3-million Pirate Ship. The pirate ship was built and designed by Disney Imagineers and is accented by an 1800-era village. Each building serves as a concessions store front, so on gameday Buccaneer Cove is alive with fans looking for to take in the atmosphere or purchase their liquid refreshment of choice. The Stadium tour lasts about an hour and a half and covers the main concourse, locker rooms, club level, press box, suites, and of course the Pirate Ship.
