Stadium Review - The
Stadium Tour![]() Minneapolis Minnesota ... a great place for football. For me, with the National Football League offseason at hand, finding something football related to do can be a challenge. I decided after my experience in Baltimore, that organized stadium tours might be the way to go. The Metrodome offers such a tour, for a very reasonable price of $3 per person and it's a walk-in tour, no reservations are required. The 50-minute tour takes is participants into the press box, luxury suites, locker room, and down on the field. So at 11am, we gathered at Gate F, and donning my throw-back Cris Carter #80 jersey, I entered the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The Metrodome was a very impressive facility. It is the first domed stadium I had a chance to visit and that was fascinating in itself. The dome is actually made of a Teflon coated material that is completely held up by the internal air pressure generated by enormous rotary fans placed around the stadium. Anywhere from eight to twenty fans can be activated depending on traffic running into and out of the stadium and a system of airlocks allows large objects to enter and exit the Metrodome. Fans enter and exit through revolving doors that maintain the air pressure inside. If one accidentally opens one of the emergency doors however, a heavy rush of air charges out of the stadium either propelling the escapee or preventing you from entering the stadium. The Metrodome is built primarily as
a football stadium, as evidenced by the oval colesium-style arrangement
of the seating. If it was a baseball stadium the seats would be
aligned in a wagon-wheel configuration with home plate at its center.
It also boasts a FieldTurf surface which replaced its astroturf in 2004.
During the tour, we were able to get down on the field and closely
inspect the FieldTruf. It has a great feel, excellent traction,
and is very forgiving on bones and joints ... very much like natural
grass. The Fieldturf surface is a system of three-inch plastic
blades woven into a rubber mat that's bonded to the floor. After
the grass has been installed 1 1/2 inches of a recycled rubber fill and
sand is then added to fill in the gaps and provide shock absorption.
Altough from above the turf looks very artificial, I was impressed with
how much it actually looks and feels like grass up close. I
definitely have to get out here for a game in the near future. |
