Stadium Review - The Batman My day began in an unassuming parking lot, nestled in a quiet industrial park in Nashville, Tennessee. It was 7:00am and I was invited by NFL Superfan and Hall of Famer, Wayne Vandevort, to take part in some tailgating preparations for the day's contest against the New York Jets (easily a rite of passage for any true Quester). Wayne owns and operates an impressive trucking company, based out of Nashville, and the back lot at Red Arrow Delivery was littered with delivery trucks, pallets, and iso-containers. By day, Wayne may be a mild mannered importer/exporter, a mover of product, but during football season, when the Titans are in town, Wayne Vandevort might just be the Bruce Wayne of Tailgating. To begin the day, Wayne had me stationed next to a fairly unimpressive looking steel iso-container near the back of the lot. As we approached the container, he rapped on the door a couple of times and gripped the handle, opening it to reveal a full kitchen complete with refrigeration & freezer cases, storage racks, grilling surfaces, and preparatory countertops. Pots and pans hung from the walls, racks of canned goods, condiments and spices were stocked on shelves; it was a tailgaters dream. The iso-container was outfitted with full power, water, lighting, and climate control, all of which were available with the flip of a switch by Batman himself (Ladies and gentlemen, I do believe we may have discovered what might just be the Tailgater's Batcave). Within this haven, this fortress of solitude, Wayne will spend up to twelve hours before gameday, cooking and preparing food for up to 200 of his closest friends. You wanna talk Batmobile? Look no further that Wayne's Titan Mobile, a converted SmartBus with luxury seating, a flat screen TV, and satellite tracking DirectTV package. The Titan Mobile also pulls the Titan Trailer, a monster tailgating structure on wheels, complete with Wayne's own patented mobile kitchen. The Titan Trailer packs in stainless steel grilling surfaces, a full sized oven, mobile refrigeration, plenty of additional countertop space, and of course a beer tap to wet your whistle in the midst of the ongoing culinary artistry. The Titan Trailer also carries six rolling chests that offer everything from storage, to warmed buffet-style serving bins, to a double binned deep fryer ... again all mobile and all setup in a matter of minutes on any blacktop surface. Wayne and his crew at TennesseeTitansTailgaters.com have certainly set the bar high for those that would attempt to stake claim to his title. We arrived at LP Field, the Tennessee Titans Stadium, at about nine in the morning. The Titan Trailer was quickly unpacked with roll carts, tables, popup tents, and a rolling flatscreen TV. Setup ran like a well oiled machine, the deep fryers were filled with oil, the generators were activated, and the grills were ignited as Tennessee Titans Mobile command began to take shape. Batman himself, his work never quite complete, continued warming and cooking in preparation for the feast to begin at about 10:30am. I have to admit that none of the other tailgaters I've visited has come close to the variety and the depth of equipment trucked in by TennesseeTitansTailgaters.com. Wayne also has an extensive support system to make sure things go off without a hitch on gameday. His partner in crime, a fellow Hall of Famer in her own right, is the Great Lady Titan. Lady Titan brings her own mobile command to each tailgating celebration as she tows in a mobile bar complete with top shelf liquor for every home game. She is also heavily involved in the food preparation on gameday as the culinary prowess of Lady Titan is flexed mightily in the fine southern-style cuisine that the group serves up. A Dynamic Duo indeed! The amount of food was overwhelming. I had Italian sausage and brats, burgers with all the fixins, fried bologna, fried chicken, and catfish. Wayne also brought out all types of sides. Guests were treated to baked beans, green beans, homemade cream corn, and chicken and dumplings. Everyone at the tailgate was more than accommodating, exuding that special brand of southern hospitality that marks every one of my visits down south. The Titans fans were a knowledgeable bunch and I spent a couple hours just talking football and shooting the breeze. Before I knew it , gametime was upon us and we made the trek to LP Field. LP Field was built in the vein of the more modern facilities in the NFL complete with the wide open concourses, massive flat screen scoreboards, and common areas for drinking and meeting up with other fans. As we made our way to the top of the stadium, section 320, I was greeted with a round of "Quest for 31!" cheers. Earlier in the weekend, I ran into some NY Jets fans who had driven over from Wisconsin to watch Brett Favre play. We ran into each other a couple of times in downtown Nashville (a great place for food, live music, and an exceptional night life), they even bought me a drink after we got to talking about the Quest. Strangely enough, this rowdy bunch of misfits were seated right next to us. It was great, they had the cheeseheads, the #4 jerseys, and were a very colorful bunch to say the least. The game unfortunately was not. Billed as a battle between the unbeaten Titans and Brett Farve's revived New York Jets, I was really hoping to see a clash of the Titans in Nashville. Unfortunately, the Titans were not on their game and it quickly became a very one sided affair, with the Titans winding up on the losing end of 34 -13 rout. The silver lining in all of this is that with an entry in the loss column, the pressure to maintain perfection, to go undefeated, is off. The Tennessee Titans can get back to the business of working toward another Super Bowl birth starting with a push toward the playoffs. The New England Patriots found out last year that the pursuit of perfection might actually be a curse, now thanks to Brett Favre, maybe the Titans won't fall into the same trap. As for me, I was happy to get back to the business of Questing for 31, a most noble pursuit indeed. |
